How much water should I drink?
Summer’s here, which means it’s time to light up the BBQ and invite your friends around. Feeling thirsty, how about a glass of lemonade or maybe even a cheeky Pimm’s – sound familiar?
Fun in the sun is what summer’s all about and quite rightly so. However, all too often fundamental things like drinking water can get overlooked. This can be detrimental to our health, causing lightheadedness and in more serious cases, full on dehydration. So it goes without saying that we should be drinking more – not less – water when graced with lovely hot weather.
Drink water all year round
But that’s not to say we should only be making the effort to drink enough water when the sun’s out. In fact, our minimum fluid requirements stay the same all year round. Whether we’re in high summer or in the depths of winter, we should always be taking on board a certain amount of water.
That said, with summer comes higher temperatures (if we’re lucky!) which make us sweat more. So it’s important to drink extra water to replenish the fluid lost through perspiration. But make no mistake, this isn’t just the purposeful perspiring you do when running in the park or playing football on the beach. It’s the moisture you wipe from your brow as you ride a busy bus into town or sit relaxing in a sunny beer garden.
How much water should I be drinking?
Unfortunately there is no clear cut answer. It all depends on an individual’s height, weight and level of physical activity. But as a guideline, health authorities tend to recommend at least eight x 8-ounce glasses of water a day (which equals about 2 litres) all year round.
If you’re going to be sweating make sure you drink extra water to account for the loss of fluids. How much? Again, it’s like asking the length of a piece of string. There’s no hard-and-fast rule, but a little tip – check your urine as this can be a good indicator (always aim for pale to clear!).
Make water interesting
Drinking water on its own can be boring, so it’s great to add a little variety. Some people have it hot! But, whether you enjoy it hot or cold, why not drop in a slice of lemon or lime for added zing, a slice of cucumber or a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar or instead a herbal tea in the morning?
