Team Row4Victory in boat sailing the Atlantic

For many of us December marks a time for relaxing and enjoying the delights that the festive season has to offer.

Not so for Team Row4Victory; a group of four fearless friends from Yorkshire who will be facing the challenge of their lives by competing in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2018.

Fraser Mowlem, Will Quarmby, Duncan Roy and Glyn Sadler will be putting their physical and mental strength to the test as they row 3,000 nautical miles across the unrelenting seas of the Atlantic Ocean in an attempt to win the 4 man pure class race and beat the current record.

To commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the signing of the Armistice marking the end of the First World War, the Row4Victory team is rowing across the Atlantic in support of two fantastic charities, the Royal British Legion and Soldier On! Further details can be viewed on the Row4Victory website.

“More people have been into space or climbed Everest than have rowed the Atlantic”

Described as the ‘World’s toughest endurance race’, Team Row4Victory will start in La Gomera in the Canaries and row 3000 miles to the ultimate finishing line – English Harbour, Antigua. The race is expected to take between 35 and 70 days, rowing two hour shifts in pairs around the clock. With storms, adverse weather and the onset of winter, hunger and difficult sleeping conditions, it’s sure to be one mighty challenge.

Team Row4Victory's route across the Atlantic

We’ve been lucky enough to have a quick chat with two of the four of Team Row4Victory… Fraser and Will, ahead of the challenge and toward the end of their training…

Q: What’s been your biggest challenge to date with the preparation for this incredible mission?

A: Raising the necessary funds has been a lot of hard work and a steep learning curve. Also getting the time to train together on the boat is difficult with so many family commitments and around work. Although families and bosses have been really supportive on the whole.

Q: Have you encountered any unexpected setbacks so far?

A: We have been quite fortunate in the fact that we haven’t had any massive setbacks. The team has worked hard throughout the campaign and stayed positive, and in turn we have had the pleasure of meeting lots of different companies and Individuals that want to support us and the charities.

Q: Any last-minute preparations that are taking place?

A: Just the final details… Where will my toothbrush live? How many wet wipes do we really need? Is 2 T shirts enough? All little details that you end up obsessing over.

Q: How long have you been training for this?

A: We have been training for two years now and still training hard but will begin to taper at the end of November so we start fresh, recovered and strong on the 12th December.

Q: What about Nutrition while you’re at sea, and how will Purition play a part?

A: Obviously, we won’t have fresh milk or a blender on board so we’ve had to be inventive. Purition offers so much more than just a protein shake so we will be using it to fortify our daily serving of cold porridge and to add flavour and interest. Our nutritionist is really impressed with Purition, the fibre and nutrients in it are a key part of our approach to keep a healthy gut for the crossing.

Purition is proud to be fuelling Row4Victory as they navigate the waves and wish them the very best of luck in their challenge. Find out more about using Purition to support an active lifestyle.
